Casebooks Eshan

Going into my third year of university, I was certain I didn't want to stay on an extra year for a master's course. That meant one thing - I had to get a job, or be doomed to another year of Maths (spoiler: this story has a happy ending). Having thoroughly enjoyed the bits of programming experience I had, I was pretty confident that I wanted to write software once I left uni, but I definitely was not an experienced programmer. I was already aware of the easy application process at Ensoft and it was one of the first places I applied to, mostly so I could feel like I'd made some progress towards my goal of finding employment. One morning of interviews later on a very cold December morning, and I had a job offer! I visited the offices a few weeks later and got the impression that this was a place where people really enjoyed working - but also that there was a real emphasis on training new recruits and producing high quality work. I enjoyed the rest of my university days playing bridge, drinking and sleeping (...not in that order), and even got to spend a summer travelling around China before starting work.

One year on and it is safe to say my inklings during that office visit were correct. I have learnt an incredible amount, from the basics of programming to making significant contributions to a large (and interesting!) software project alongside truly fantastic engineers. There is a great support network to help out when required - no problem is too big or too small. I have also taken on pieces of responsibility, including helping new recruits learn Python and making them feel at home during their first few weeks, which I definitely didn't expect to have the opportunity to do within my first year.

The best thing about Ensoft is the people, and the social aspect is amazing - I never thought I would make this many friends from my job! As well as the regular company organised socials, there is a lot to get involved with. From going for a drink after work, to making wind-up toys, to walking around hills, there is truly something for everybody. I never expected to have this much fun at my job - I get to hang out with smart, dedicated and interesting people everyday.
